BODY MEMOIR  (2024)
肌體回憶錄

Is the sofa a sofa?

The space expands— originated from your ordinary living room, it extends to memories outdoors. The act of sitting on a sofa becomes a trip of wandering: you see and hear the path you tumbled every day to your childhood home.

The sofa joins you. You sit on the sofa as you sit on the feeling of drowning. You touch the handle and feel the silicone: it feels like skin, but ice-cold, unreal. It’s almost like the skin of memories. Through plastic and human skin-like texture, you are in your body and brain, in touch with your old selves and past minds.

The sofa is a sofa,
also an organ in you, a synapse between your nerve cells,
your body memoir.

So… what if (it’s the mind that embraces me)       (2024)

1. It started with my constant compulsive thinking over things in my life—— annoyed and frustrated, yet I could never stop. Why would my mind overwhelm me with meaningless repetition--
Click. What if it’s not the mind that crumbles over me, but embraced all the ‘me’s in the world, all versions of ‘me’ and all ‘I’ have encountered. That’s when I realized the constant repetition is like putting together puzzles, and with the repetitions, you see the unrevealed.

2. It seems like a repetition, but it’s never the same. Every once more, it’s a process toward an unknown place.  With that thought in mind, I hand-wrote the one sentence over and over again till I pieced pictures of myself together.

3. Different mediums convey “the same thing” very differently. Along with the repetition of the same words with digital and physical mediums, with refraction and color filtering, when moving to different angles, different things happen.
There seems to be a right answer to the illusion puzzle, but you can always choose to see it from a different angle. At some moment, a face murmuring the sentence appears; at some angle, only  scattered pieces and layered colors and light are seen.

4. Nevertheless, delve into the repetition (or not), and let the mind embrace whatever it captures.

The work captures the uncertainty that I observed in myself and what comes with it: the compulsive need to find, in a repetitive, infinitive, and seemingly extreme imagination of penetrating.

As in old Greek mythology, Aphrodite was born from the foam of blood produced by Uranus's severed genitalia; In this work, I am reborn from the blood of my own body - a pretty boy Aphrodite birthing a new self.

ONE MUST IMAGINE SISYPHUS HAPPY
 (2023)
西西弗斯痛與樂

Tossing and turning between hospital beds and creating, I am penetrated by the iron nail-like uncertainty and pain. The penetration repeats in an endless manner, ruthlessly aiming at my body and soul. In hospital beds, I start to contemplate the balance between creation and I; For forever, to create something is like Sisyphus pushing the enormous rock, time and time again, infinitely. He reaches the “ending” and starts all over again. Imagine, and reimagine. Life for me is no longer linear, yet looping exquisitely. Roaming back to my past, I summon the old pain and learn it from a new beginning. Such repetition, as if I am Sisyphus holding that boulder with my full strength, talking one infinite step.

And who would imagine Sisyphus stuck in the limitlessness, might be taking that secret sip of that unimaginable joy?
